How Earth Orbits Around the Sun

In Science, students are currently learning about the "Earth, Moon, and Beyond". Mrs. Garces will be teaching this Unit, which consists of eight lessons. She will be using a lot of hands-on activities, group presentations, and will be inviting a guest speaker from the Hawaii Astronomical Society on March 2, 2009.

The benckmarks students will be covering will be:
  • Benchmark SC.5.2.1: Use models and/or simulations to represent and investigate features of objects, events, and processes in the real world
  • Benchmark SC.5.8.1: Describe the relationship (size and distance) of Earth to other components in the solar system.
  • Benchmark SC.5.8.2: Describe examples of what astronomers have discovered using telescopes
  • Benchmark SC.5.8.3: Explain that the planets orbit the sun and that the moon orbits the Earth. Benchmark SC.5.8.4: Demonstrate that the day and night are caused by the rotation of the Earth on its axis.

Here is a picture of a hands-on activity of students who are making a moon crater and investigating on how craters could be made.

Students are working in their groups and taking notes on their reading.

Last week Friday, January 31, 2009, students presented their group presentations on how Earth orbits around the sun.

Please visit our class Science bulletin board for more photos and students group posters. The bulletin board is located on campus in front of the stair way.

Dear Mrs. Garces

I think the blog is beautiful. The science one is cool because it shows us being brilliant.(That's a Wordly Wise word we're studying) Then when our parents go on the blog they can see what we were doing. They'd be so proud of us.Thanks again for making the blog. :)
