HAPPY BELATED VALENTINES DAY
Also check out a short video clip of the activity:
From the "Guys" point of view by Student #38:
Yesterday (2-18-09) the always excited zoo of frenzied animals fighting for food in the Fifth Grade room fell silent as Mr.Honda started a lecture with the boys. He took all of them outside like captured prisoners. He led them in his tough majestic walk to the office where they were to be talked to by the principal. Then the most relieving thing like a first breath of air after being under water for five minutes finally took place.
The teacher with an ever frighting look of grimness turned his face into a smile so big it stretched across the whole school! Mr.Honda strode to his giant silver truck and pulled out a beautiful bouquet of pink perfectly gardened roses that could make the grinch smile forever and it's smell could make someones nose just as pink as the flowers itself. Mr.Honda explained to the boys that they would be taught to be gentlemen in handsome black tuxedos who would be put in the hot seat of an erupting volcano.
The "to be" gentlemen would have to walk in a tough but ever so gentle strode and make eye contact with their choice of a beautiful girl and give them a delicate flower of love and say the very meaningful words: "Happy Belated-Valentines Day". At the end of that forever lasting sentence many of the boys were stuffed like a turkey on Thanksgiving with feelings of anxiety, nervousness, weirdness and many different assorted feelings that made the men blush and hide behind each others shivering bodies of trembles.
Then the moment of fear finally came. The Gentlemen each were led into the room of giggling, cute and beautiful ladies. They each had their individual turns to walk towards the girls of their choice with a pink carnations to give. The gentlemen had to give eye contact and say "Happy Valentines Day" while giving the carnations to the girls. The girls responded with a "thank you".
Yesterday the fifth grade girls had a very mature discussion with Mrs. Oshiro. As for the boys... Boy they were in trouble. When Mr. Honda called all the guys outside the girls thought the boys were really in trouble. As we were sitting on the floor the gentlemen walked in holding flowers. We were all shocked and also confused. What are those for, we all wondered. After that Mr. Honda explained what the flowers were for. The guys looked nervous and we looked the same.
As they walked up to us they shivered with nervousness. They scratched their heads and slowly walked to the fifth grade girls. As they handed us the delicate pink flowers, they said the most sweetest thing. "Happy Belated Valentines Day." We politely said "Thank you" and walked away. After that, all the girls and boys blushed and felt uncomfortable.

Aloha Run Newsletter
Student number 10 and 26 signed up to run the Aloha run because they both thought it would be a good experience and that it would be fun. Student number 48, signed up to volunteer instead of running because she wanted to see what it was like to help out at the Aloha Run. She also needed to raise money to pay for her supplies for girl scout. Mrs. Oshiro signed up for the Aloha Run to do something healthy and active with her children. She would call it the Aloha "walk" and not "run" because she would walk all the way to the finish line. Mrs. Oshiro shared that the Aloha Run makes good conversations with fellow teachers and friends while walking, and a great way to fellowship.
Mrs. Oshiro, and the three students shared that the people were energetic and friendly throughout the event. Both runners and volunteers said that they enjoyed the event, however they were tired at the end of the run. All would like to sign up again for next year to see if they improved on their finish time.
For next year, Mrs. Garces and Mrs. Oshiro challenges you to sign up for the Aloha Run. The event is a great way to get active in a healthy way. You will have lots of fun too.

Answers to Some Questions Asked
Q: Why is the HSA testing period during the week the students return from break and intersession?
A: Statewide testing window for the Spring HSA 2009 is April 6-24. We do not test on Monday because we need to remind the students to go to bed early and eat a good breakfast. Also, there needs to be a make-up week within the testing window to cover students that are absent on actual test days. Momilani's test dates are April 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16 with make-ups from 20-24th.
Q: Is there school on Friday, Feb. 13th?
A: Yes, we have school on Friday, 2/13. This waiver day was the one that was switched to Thurs. 1/29. A flyer was sent home at the beginning of 3rd quarter and a reminder was posted in Momilani's Messenger newsletter, which was sent home last week.
Thank you, students and parents, for taking time to check out our 5th grade blog!

The Color Wheel
To challenge the students, Mrs. Oshiro will only provide the colors red, blue, and yellow paint for students to start with. Students will then need to blend the colors to create the secondary and tertiary colors. Once all the colors are created students will work independently in creating their own form of a color wheel. Stay tuned for the pictures of the color wheels....
Students will also attend an exciting field trip to the Honolulu Art Academy to further learn about the use of colors.
Here are some pictures of our brilliant students creating their colors:

How Earth Orbits Around the Sun
In Science, students are currently learning about the "Earth, Moon, and Beyond". Mrs. Garces will be teaching this Unit, which consists of eight lessons. She will be using a lot of hands-on activities, group presentations, and will be inviting a guest speaker from the Hawaii Astronomical Society on March 2, 2009.
The benckmarks students will be covering will be:
- Benchmark SC.5.2.1: Use models and/or simulations to represent and investigate features of objects, events, and processes in the real world
- Benchmark SC.5.8.1: Describe the relationship (size and distance) of Earth to other components in the solar system.
- Benchmark SC.5.8.2: Describe examples of what astronomers have discovered using telescopes
- Benchmark SC.5.8.3: Explain that the planets orbit the sun and that the moon orbits the Earth. Benchmark SC.5.8.4: Demonstrate that the day and night are caused by the rotation of the Earth on its axis.
Here is a picture of a hands-on activity of students who are making a moon crater and investigating on how craters could be made.
Students are working in their groups and taking notes on their reading.
Last week Friday, January 31, 2009, students presented their group presentations on how Earth orbits around the sun.
Please visit our class Science bulletin board for more photos and students group posters. The bulletin board is located on campus in front of the stair way.
Our New Student Teacher
I want to extend to you and your child my warmest greetings. My name is Mrs. Lynnette Garces and I will be Mrs. Oshiro’s student teacher for January 13 through April 29, 2009.
I am currently in the process of completing my Master’s in Elementary Education at University of Phoenix and will be graduating this coming May upon completion of student teaching. In the past year, I have been working as a long-term substitute teacher for teachers on maternity leave. The schools I have long term substituted for were Pauoa Elementary (5th grade), Manoa Elementary (4th grade), and Waialae Elementary (Kindergarten).
To share with you a little more about myself, I enjoy hip-hop dancing, modeling, learning how to cook, and window-shopping. However, I mostly enjoy traveling with my husband. My husband and I like to volunteer our time helping out the less fortunate in developing countries such as Cambodia, Fiji, Nepal, Thailand, and the Philippines. We recently returned to Hawaii from the Philippines where we visited our 5-year-old sponsor child for the first time.
I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to student teach at Momilani Elementary along side the mentorship of Mrs. Oshiro. I am also looking forward to teaching, exploring new things, and interacting with you and your child this upcoming semester.
Sincerely,
Mrs. L. Garces
